Homovanillic acid is a major metabolite of catecholamine (noradrenaline, adrenaline and dopamine) metabolism and a high proportion of patients with neuroblastoma and phaeochromoctoma excrete increased amounts of it in their urine. Plasma levels of homovanillic acid (pHVA) have been suggested to provide a measure of dopaminergic activity in the central nervous system.
