LIFR is a signal-transducing molecule. LIF binds to LIFR and IL6R forming a hetrodimer that activates cell signalling though activation of the JAK-STAT signalling pathway. Signalling through LIF and the LIFR have been shown to be important for mouse embryonic stem cell self renewal as well as well as the immune system. Defects in LIFR are the cause of Stueve-Wiedemann syndrome (SWS).
