Placental protein 13 (PP13) is a galectin expressed by the syncytiotrophoblast. PP13 is a homo-dimer that undergoes conformational changes due to very high affinity for sugar residues. PP13 is a protein expressed only in the placenta. It is involved in gluing the placenta to the uterus, and in remodelling the maternal arteries to expand them.The recombinant PP13 clone was expressed and purified from bacteria, and was characterized to be a member of the galectin super-family, whose members are important in differentiation and proliferation.
